I just started watching The Wire via Netflix.

Season 1, about 7 episodes in...it is already the most compelling, best-written, intelligent thing I've ever seen on television.

Like the Dead's music, you HAVE to pay attention or you'll be lost-- but if you're willing to follow the myriad plot and sub-plot lines, it's more than worth it. Great stuff.

Honorable mentions to "Six Feet Under", "Lost" (although it's become rather silly at this point), and "Extras" (or anything w/Ricky Gervais).

I need to add another show to your list.

I still think that Homicide is one of the best shows ever on TV. There are a number of Wire connections in it too. Most obviously, being that they're in Baltimore.

It was truly revolutionary.

Used to watch Homicide--a number of the actors from that show also appear in The Wire.

Both shows fantastic (great soundtrack tunes on Homicide as well...lots of Tom Waits)
